ArtPrize 2023 - Finalist

When I first applied to ArtPrize 2023 in the spring of that year, I had the above four items (each is a collage of four 8x10 pictures). I was accepted by Erin Barnes, manager of Sundance Grill and Bar.  During the summer, I went to Grand Rapids and met with her.  After looking at additional work, Erin agreed to let me display over 100 items.

I believe I was a finalist because Erin gave me the room to show the depth and breadth of my work.

While I was at ArtPrize it occurred to me I have never explained how to view my images.  To see an 11x17” picture, it is best to view it from about 12-15 feet.  On a regular web page, it is best to step back 5-6 feet.  On a cell phone, hold it at arms length.  You have to be far enough away so that you can’t see the lines around the triangles.  Your mind will do the work.  With the waterfall with purple foliage at the top, you should see the water cascading back and forth with it ending up as foam as it plunges into the pool at the base.  This is the same with the other waterfall.  With the scarlet tanager, the greens and browns appear to blur or go out of focus and the tanager pops out at you.  The background for the blue jay appears to fade and the blue jay pops out.  If viewed at the right distance, the “Oh wow” effect occurs.  This is not true for my portraits or human figures.

(I ran out of room to display all of my work.  There are a couple that didn't get exhibited)
