Novucubism Cubism

Novucubism is a fresh, new, modern interpretation of life inspired by the work of Paul Cezanne. The novucubist is not interested in creating depth. Novucubism uses flat, simple geometric shapes to represent selected elements from the object. The artist constructs the image with a strong use of positive and negative space. This forces the viewer to interact with the image. Some images are easy to interpret; others require more work by the viewer to understand the novucubist.

All of my pictures are abstract. Once your eye and brain have become adjusted to my work, it will be easy to see the image intended in 99% of the pictures. In that regard, they aren't abstract. To help train your eye and brain, put a picture on the screen and stand back 3-5 steps from the screen. This is what the picture would look like on your wall. As you get closer to the picture, you see the details I have put into it.

In 2018, my genetic tremors became so bad I had to give up pen-and-ink drawing. This was a blessing in disguise. I was probably a little bit better than an average pen-and-ink artist. It took me a couple of years of experimentation to create novucubism.

I use a digital photograph as a guide for creating my images. If I put the digital photograph that I start with next to my finished image, you would probably think I am the world's worst artist. The photo and my image frequently don't resemble each other. Artistic license allows me to change everything and anything. As you go through each link, you will notice the quality of my work improves as you move down through my work. I am happy to say I believe my work has improved since the beginning of this style. There are images from years ago that are quite poor and I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish. I save them as a reminder of what not to do.

Novucubists do not intend our work to be life-like or realistic in any way. Our work uses geometric shapes, a monochromatic color palette, and a flattened plane. Depth is not portrayed. The main difference between cubists and novucubists is looking at a subject from multiple perspectives. My best novucubist work are the four groups: portrait, medium, tall, and wide.

Multiple views of the same image forces the novucubist to interpret the image and reconstruct it in different ways with a different emphasis in each view. The novucubist is challenged to express their abstract views in a way that all viewers can understand and appreciate. In hiking, lions, K3703, and mountains, the same image is created in a variety of different views. My favorite view in each group is the most abstract view. This is what I see when I begin the process.
